You Are My Glory
Have you ever watched a drama, saw the leads struggle to overcome all their difficulties, and then felt that the payoff at the end was too little? There are just too little episodes left depicting the life of the couple and you are left hoping for a second season just to see them enjoy life with each other?
If so You are my Glory is for you. I think its best described as a slice of life drama with some gaming elements. You are taken through the formation of the relationship between Yu Tu and Qiao Jingjing and get to see their lives as a couple in the end. There is so little resistance provided by the secondary leads that it may not even be appropriate to call them secondary leads. I have not timed it but I would be surprised if they had half an episode of screen time each.
I rate this drama 5/5. I would not mind watching it over and over. In fact I still watch clips of the series from time to time along with Love Scenery. My particular favorite scene is the one where Ye Tu's mother finds the couple in an embrace and their relationship is exposed. Ye Tu's reactions as JingJing throws him under the bus are exceptional. Although my favorite line in the scene is JingJing asking Ye Tu "Aren’t you going to ask how I know where your house is?". While Ye Tu just stares at her lovingly and hugs her. It is rare for a hug to convey so much meaning. Most of the time it is just used as a way to express love or affection. Yet somehow this one particular hug managed to say "I know you’ve been waiting for so long, I’m sorry I took so long to get here, everything will be fine from now on". I think the last time I was so emotionally affected by something a drama did was when Kim Tan in the Heirs drama cries and asks his brother "When am I going back to America?". Qiao JingJing actually reminds me of Kim Tan in a lot of ways. "Other people want the world but he only wanted Cha Eun Sang".
Title
As a non native chinese fan of these dramas I confess that sometimes the titles or other expressions escape me. For instance I still have not figured out why Liang Chen is called orange. You are my Glory however is a perfect title for this work of art. The series goes to show how both leads complement and elevate each other.
I mentioned that in any work with a magical girlfriend, and QingQing definitely qualifies as one, the main task of the protagonist is to prove that he is worthy of her. In fact it is his inability to solve this internal contradiction that causes the main conflict of the series and hurts QingQing. Ye Tu succeeds in ways that Lu Jing from my previous review was never given a chance to succeed in. He uses his scientific, gaming, and engineering skill sets to provide solutions and resources to QingQing that would otherwise not have been available to her had she chosen a different lover.
Game
If I have one complaint about this series it is the game. Don't get me wrong though. The presentation was interesting enough that it combined with my next show "Falling for your Smile" encouraged me to start my own Mobile Legends account which I have been resisting for all these years. My main complaint about the game is that it does not seem to have anything to do with the rest of the series. It just provides a convenient excuse for the leads to interact with each other. You could actually have the game and QingQing's confession as season 1 and the rest of the series as season 2 as the two halves are so disconnected.
Hugs and Kisses
Its amusing to me that QingQing always seems to outsmart Ye Tu and that his default way to fight against her is to kiss her. I rarely mention these parts but when Ye Tu drags QingQing and forces her to sit in his lap it just looks so right. It looks like they are both pieces of one puzzle that fit together instead of two individuals. I rarely see that level of chemistry in rom-coms.
Well that's it my first five star review. If you want a sugar sweet adventure with two outstanding leads You are my Glory is for you.
